Most homes built in Bristol after the 1960s were constructed with a trussed roof. A factory-made system of prefabricated timber frames that, while structurally efficient, fills the loft space with a web of diagonal bracing that makes standard conversion impossible without significant structural work.
A cut roof conversion is exactly that work. We carefully cut through and restructure the existing roof trusses, installing steel beams and supports to carry the load previously held by the truss web. This opens up the loft space to create a fully usable, conversion-ready void. Once complete, the space can be finished as a Velux, dormer or any other conversion type, giving modern Bristol homes access to the same loft conversion potential as older properties.

We start with a thorough assessment of the existing truss roof, checking truss type, spacing, ridge height, ceiling joist strength and overall structural condition. This determines exactly what steelwork is needed and which conversion types are achievable once the trusses are cut.
With structural calculations signed off, we install the steel framework that will carry the load currently held by the truss webbing. Once the steelwork is in place, the truss members are carefully cut away to create a clear, open loft void that is structurally sound and ready for conversion.
With the void opened up, we design the conversion, whether that is a Velux, dormer, hip-to-gable or other type, and manage any planning applications or permitted development confirmation required. Most cut roof conversions in Bristol that proceed with a rear dormer or Velux still fall under permitted development.
We complete the full internal fit-out including insulation, plasterboard, flooring, staircase, electrics and any en-suite or bathroom works. The result is a fully finished, building regulations approved room delivered under our 10-year structural guarantee.
